Apply to be a Section Leader
Section leaders play a significant role in shaping the transition of first-year students into the beginning of their Stanford experience. Section leaders are eager to facilitate small group discussions, engage in meaningful conversation with their peers, and build community within a cohort. As a section leader, students will learn the research that serves as the foundation of the Frosh 101 and Transfer 101 curriculum and how to apply it effectively within the sections they will lead. Expectations and Responsibilities
- Enroll in and complete UAR 194A (Frosh 101 and Transfer 101 – Leader Training) in the Spring.
- Attend Section Leader Orientation in the Fall.
- Attend weekly section leader check-in meetings in the Fall.
- Complete individual prep each week.
- Lead a weekly 80-minute section in the Fall.
Eligibility
- All applicants must be authorized to work in the US. Student worker onboarding will require I-9 verification.
- All student hiring is subject to university policy. Additional information can be found in the online administrative guide 10.1.1 Undergraduate Student Employment.
- Any students interested in leading are welcome to apply; however, students who completed Frosh 101 or Transfer 101 will be given higher consideration for selection.
- Leaders must commit to leading an in-person section in the Fall. Students who are away from campus in the Fall (e.g., studying away, on a leave of absence, have graduated, etc.) are not eligible to participate.
- Note for student-athletes: Serving as a section leader is a paid position. Compliance Services will review and confirm all student-athlete applicants as part of the hiring process. Before applying for or committing to the position, student-athletes are encouraged to confer their eligibility with Compliance Services.
Compensation
- Section leaders (i.e., student workers) will be paid hourly during Fall Quarter, at a rate of $18.70 per hour.
- Paychecks will be issued based on hours worked each pay period. Every month has two pay periods: 1st-15th of the month and 16th-last day of the month.
- All student workers must record actual hours worked in Axess Timecard each pay period throughout the Fall.
- Undergraduate students may work a maximum of 15 total hours each week, counting all campus jobs. Facilitating one section of Frosh 101/Transfer 101 will require up to four hours per week during Fall Quarter.
- While this is an hourly, non-exempt position subject to overtime rules and regulations, overtime is not expected or approved for this position.

Training Course
Section leaders, charged with the responsibility of facilitating a curriculum designed to help new students transition to life at Stanford, must take a required training course: UAR 194A .
UAR 194A
In UAR 194A (Frosh 101 and Transfer 101 - Leader Training), students will learn about effective leadership by engaging with the following core topics/themes, including: teaching and facilitation skills, navigating difficult conversations, and supporting first-year students as they transition to Stanford. Students will read and discuss research associated with the above topics and will practice facilitating activities within small groups. UAR 194A is offered on a Letter grading basis.
